Magic Moments, 50's Rock 'n Roll Review

Rolf Crocker
“For as long as I can remember, music has always been a part of my life,” says Rolf Crocker, vocalist and lead guitarist for Magic Moments. “My parents didn’t play any instruments, but music was always on in the home. Frank Sinatra, Glen Miller, Charlie Rich, Anne Murray – a pretty eclectic collection.”

Rolf received his first AM transistor radio in 1970 at 7 years old. Growing up in Southern California, there were two stations he listened to – 93 KHJ and 1110 KRLA. That was his early musical education – Top 40 and Oldies. He developed an early affinity for Surf Music, especially Jan & Dean, The Beach Boys and The Ventures. Then he heard Buddy Holly…

“I was blown away – Buddy had passed some 16 years earlier, but to me it sounded fresh and electric – unlike anything I had ever heard before.” He subsequently acquired a 5 and a half foot tall cardboard cutout of Buddy that remained in his room all through high school. Rolf started out on drums, but quickly switched to guitar because “it was easier.” As a sophomore in high school, he was suffering from a broken heart from the loss of his first ‘summer love’ and thought if he learned some songs, he’d win his girl back. He never won back the girl, but had practiced so much he began playing in clubs 6 months later.

“We played all the animal fraternal organizations – Elks, Moose, Eagles and the occasional VFW hall. That was my life all through high school – a musical ‘Weekend Warrior.”

Since then, with a few notable exceptions, Rolf has been actively involved in music, particularly in churches. That’s where Magic Moments bassist Rick Zuniga approached Rolf with the opportunity to play in Magic Moments. “Rick approached me on the stage at church and asked me what my schedule was like – ‘Insane,’ I told him. Then he explained what they were doing as a band, playing Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Chuck Berry and other 50’s artists. I couldn’t say no. So here I am, playing all the music I was raised on with a bunch of great guys and having the time of my life.”

Rolf is a Banker by day, is married to Esther and has six wonderful children ranging from 2 months to 20 years old.
